Daphne and Apollo

Ah, another horny man with a tree myth.

I suppose you can’t completely point your finger at Apollo for being sex driven in this myth. After all, Eros shot one of his love arrows at him. Then again, Apollo did antagonize Eros not that long before about Eros’ arrows being petty…

Anyway, Apollo saw a demi goddess nymph named Daphne. Daphne was a follower of Apollo’s twin sister Artemis, who was the goddess of hunting, unmarried women, etc. Daphne valued her freedom highly and wanted to stay an unmarried virgin forever, just like Artemis. But Mr. Horn Dog, Apollo, had other ideas.

When Apollo first saw her, he ran after her. Naturally, Daphne ran as fast as she could away from the crazed man. Though Daphne was a pretty fast runner, Apollo was catching up to her. Just when he nearly got her, Daphne prayed to her father, who was a river god, to help her. Her father turned her into a laurel tree. Apollo, who was dissapointed to say the least, made the laurel tree sacred, because he still had a thing for Daphne.
