Midas

We’ve all heard of the saying “Trust the Midas touch,” but does anyone actually know what it means? In Greek mythology, Midas was a king. He had helped Dionysus when he was in a rut, so Dionysus, the god of wine, let everything Midas touch turn to gold. Of course Midas loved it at first, it was as if money was falling off trees. However, things soon turned for the worst.

When Midas picked up something to eat, it would turn to gold. Obviously this wasn’t a good thing, but when his daughter came over to kiss him she turned into gold too. Of course Midas was mortified and ended up running outside, ironically, the grass underneath his feet turning to gold too.

It was against the “rules” of Olympus to take away a gift a god gives someone, but somehow Dionysus gathered up the courage to disobey it and take the power away from him, much to Midas’ happiness. Everything that Midas turned into gold turned back as well, including his daughter. Though he didn’t get his obscene amount of wealth like he hoped, at least his daughter was okay. For a Greek myth, it was definitely a happy ending.
