Semele & Dionysus

Dionysus, or Bacchus in Roman, was the god of wine and ecstasy. He was the son of the king god Zeus, and the mortal woman Semele.
How was he a god if his mother was a mortal? Well, Zeus thought that since Dionysus created wine, that he should become an Olympian. After some conflict, the goddess Hestia gave him her seat as an Olympian to keep the peace… or just to stop hearing her family members bitching arguing, like they always seemed to do. Granted though, she was still a goddess.
When Zeus’ wife Hera found out about Semele, she was still pregnant with Dionysus. Hera went to Semele and told her that her lover, Zeus, was hiding something from her.
After some convincing on Hera’s part, the next time Zeus dropped by to visit Semele in his mortal disguise, Semele asked Zeus to do whatever she asked. Zeus swore on the river Styx, which was unbreakable, that he’d do so. Sadly, Semele asked Zeus to show him his true form, and he was forced to do so. After seeing something divine, the mortal Semele died. Zeus was able to save his unborn son Dionysus by… putting him into his thigh.
