Bookmakers have suspended bets on the identity of the new Doctor Who following reports that actor Rory Kinnear had been offered the role. The actor - who is the son of the late Roy Kinnear - has been the subject of speculation for the past week since Matt Smith announced he was quitting the show. And the latest rumours suggest he has been offered the job by show bosses, who are awaiting his decision.
As a result of the speculation Ladbrokes has said it is no longer taking bets on Matt's successor, following a flurry of activity on Rory which made him the new favourite.
Previously Cutting It star Ben Daniels had been ahead of him in the betting.
"All bets are now off when it comes to the identity of the next Doctor Who," a Ladbrokes spokesperson said.
"Kinnear had always been a popular punt but after a flurry of activity which pushed him into favouritism we closed the book."
A BBC spokesman dismissed the rumours as "pure speculation".
Rory, 35, is best known for his role as the spy Tanner in the two most recent James Bond films Quantum Of Solace and Skyfall.
Others who have been linked to the role include Russell Tovey, Rupert Grint, David Harewood, Dominic Cooper and fellow Bond star Ben Whishaw.
